After Your Masters In The UK What Next?

After your masters in the Uk what next? This is the big question you need to ask yourself before leaving your home country for the UK significantly if you change your mind about returning. Remember that to be issued a UK or US study visa, you have to prove to the visa officer that you will return to your home country after your studies. Nevertheless, you might like it there and would not want to return hence you need to ask yourself the question in the early part of this paragraph. If you are currently an International master’s student in any of the UK or the US, you need to start now to plot your next move after your master’s.

The main pathway for persons outside the core healthcare professions – microbiologists, lawyers, engineers, architects, surveyors, bankers, etc is to do a Masters’s Degree program in a UK 🇬🇧 University. This guarantees you a Tier 4 Visa and at least 3 years’ stay in the UK.

The BIG question anyone embarking on such a venture should ask is: “After Your master’s in the UK, what next?” 🤔

To answer this, there is good news and bad news. We will start with the bad news.

Bad news: Unless your profession is on the Shortage Occupation List, it is usually difficult to get a job that will sponsor a Tier 2 Visa to enable you to remain and work in the UK 🇬🇧 after your studies. Thus, you may be homebound after your 1-year study.

Good news:

  1. The UK 🇬🇧 has restarted the 2-year post study meaning that after your 1-year study, you can be given another 2 years to look for a job. Within these two years, a lot can happen for any hard-working Nigerian.

a. You can make enough money to return home and start up something. 💯

b. You can plot and relocate to another country like Canada (via Express Entry) or the US (via PhD and Co).

c. If you are single and ready to mingle, you may meet a citizen, fall in love and marry. 😍 Make sure you are in love o and you don’t marry out of desperation. Enough said.

  1. If you are lucky, you can get a funded PhD program in the UK 🇬🇧 and if you do so well, the University may retain you post-PhD as a lecturer (they will file for a work Visa for you).
  2. The proposed Healthcare Visa for Healthcare Support Workers will greatly help persons outside healthcare as it enables them get a Tier 2 Visa to work in healthcare. The care worker job does not need any special qualifications – certification from basic training offered by the employers will suffice.

So, these are the options for persons whose professions are not in the Shortage Occupation List
