Sometime last year after I felt like I had gotten enough training I needed to kickstart my career as a content manager. I went straight to the internet applying for different gigs. After some months, I wasn’t getting any responses to my  applications and I didn’t know why. Even after I have been on job interviews, I never hear back from the employer. One thing I knew was that I have the skills, experience, and education to be a good employee; but for some reason, I was not getting any job offers. This kept me wondering for days like, what gives? Why aren’t employers calling or emailing me?

So, I decided to take a step back. One possibility is that I was doing something wrong. I realized that applying for a job was not just about filling out an online form or emailing my resume. I mean, everyone would have the job of their dreams if that was the case. There are more applicants than open positions, so hiring managers are selective about who they call in for an interview.

You probably wouldn’t be reading this if it weren’t part of my success story. This is my way of giving back to society and having people learn from my experience. The truth is that If you want to stand out as a candidate, you need to do more than just fill out an online application form or submit a resume via email.  Hiring managers want to see that candidates are serious about getting the position and will work hard once they get it. In this article, I will show you reasons why employers might not be calling or emailing you for that dream job. While the job market is getting better and better, the competition for jobs is heating up. If you’re looking to get a job in today’s hyper-competitive world, you need to know what you’re doing wrong. In this section, we will talk about some of the things you might be doing wrong. I will try my best to explain them critically and present some of the best practices. 

1. You Don’t Know Who You Are Talking To

This is one common mistake job seekers make. Whether it’s not researching the company, not researching other employees in the company. or not know who the hiring manager is, this can impact your success in the recruitment process. 

However, this can be really tricky depending on the kind of job. This is because I have applied for some remote jobs, and yes, some jobs where I couldn’t find anything about the company. Yes, no need to raise your eyebrows. It happens and they are not scammers, it’s just that they do not have an online presence orI am applying through an agent. Although many organizations like this don’t exist, there is still a possibility. 

Nonetheless, before you apply for a position, make sure you know everything there is to know about a company. Do your research on the company, its products and services, its mission statement and its competitors. This will help you tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight how you can help that particular company succeed in the marketplace. Doing this will show hiring managers that you are serious about working for their company and that you want to be an asset to them.

It doesn’t hurt if you run some background checks on some of the employees, you can talk about them during the interview. Whether you want to meet or that they inspire you, this gives the hiring manager an insight into how curious you can be. 

2. Your Resume/cover letter is a generic template

I wanted to say, “Oh, your resumé/cover letter sucks.” That might sound a little bit rude, but it is what it is. Meanwhile, every job application has a different set of requirements needed by employers. When applying for jobs, make sure you are tailoring your resume to those specific requirements each time so that hiring managers know that you have what they are looking for in candidates. 

I understand you, after all your years of experience, wouldn’t talking about everything make you stand out? However, the same goes with your cover letter, keep it concise and relevant. You’ve got one chance to make a first impression, so make sure your resume isn’t going to turn employers away. 4. You’re not applying for jobs or You’re applying to every job you see.

One of the biggest mistakes a job seeker can make is applying to jobs they are not qualified for. This is funny isn’t it? But people do it. In fact the annoying part is that they don’t know what they want. 

Sometime ago, a friend of mine reached out to me that he is open for jobs. I asked him a simple question, what jobs are you open to? The reason I asked that question was to ensure I only send him job opportunities that he is likely to qualify for. Surprise, surprise, he told me he was open for anything. I told him, “this must be a joke, yeah?” And then I realized that he wasn’t joking at all. My friend is just living along, oh my God!

You must have a clear goal and ambition to do whatever it is in life. Be it education, career, relationship, you need to have a roadmap. Applying to a position you are not qualified for in hopes that they will somehow be able to convince the hiring manager of your abilities, Unfortunately, is a fruitless effort. Spend time on jobs you actually have the qualifications for.

Again, this may seem counter intuitive, many people aren’t applying for any job. You know the truth, yeah? If you aren’t applying for jobs, you aren’t going to land a job. It’s that simple. Don’t wait for employers to come to you, take the initiative and seek out positions that interest you. If you’re worried about wasting time on a fruitless search, remember that it’s far less painful to search for a job than it is to be unemployed. 5. You don’t have enough experience

In fact, most of the gigs I have done are through referrals and there is no one stop platform where you get to connect with people. I have seen people make it via social media platforms such as Linkedin, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and even as closed as WhatsApp. 

The reality is that everyone has some sort of network they can use to their advantage—whether they realize it or not. Put it to work.
